The innovation by Hornady can hardly be matched, especially when you consider the personal defense and duty ammunition that has been engineered in the past 12 years or so. This .40S&W round in the Critical Defense line is an obvious benefactor of those innovations.
The 165 grain projectile is a jacketed hollow point with flex-tip technology which ensures reliable and uniform mushrooming on contact regardless of the layers or type of clothing it must penetrate before entering the target’s body. The powder selection is clean burning and burns more of the powder so you aren’t left with too much unburned powder to clean up or breathe in.
Significant penetration for a .40 S&W means this will be a threat stopper. Most ballistic gelatin tests puts the penetration at between 13 and 17 inches in 10% gelatin. This is more than adequate as a personal defense round and the uniformity of the expanded projectiles proves Hornady has a legitimate .40 Smith & Wesson personal defense round on the market.
