In 2003, Bill Alexander and Janne Pohjoispaa designed the 6.5mm Grendel cartridge using the .220 Russian as a starting platform. They wanted a round that could retain its accuracy out to 800 yards with minimal recoil and easily available components. The 6.5mm Grendel has many different bullet weight variations from 90-grain to 144 grain that have specific loadings. Surprisingly enough, the 6.5 Grendel was a very versatile cartridge and it has been adapted to semi-automatic platforms like the AR15, as well as being used in certain bolt-action rifles. Even though it was originally designed to provide the US Military with a cartridge for use between the 5.56 NATO and the 7.62 NATO, the 6.5 Grendel has a larger sized case head so Military Spec 30 round magazines can hold a maximum of 26 rounds. That and the Mil-Spec AR15 bolt face does not fit the 6.5 Grendel… so a specially made AR15 bolt is needed to run it.
