The 6.5 Grendel is a versatile cartridge and is currently being used in both bolt action and semi-automatic platforms. Originally, it was intended to fill a role in the US Military cartridge world that would have fallen between the 7.62 NATO and the 5.56 NATO. The Military Spec AR15 bolt will not work with the 6.5 Grendel case… so a purpose built AR15 bolt is required to cycle and fire it. Janne Pohjoispaa and Bill Alexander designed the 6.5mm Grendel loading in 2003 with the .220 Russian as their base cartridge. They wanted 800-yard accuracy with very little recoil and components that are easy to acquire. The 6.5mm Grendel has multiple bullet weight options, 90-grain to 144 grain, and each grain weight has specific load calculations available for it.
